The Christmas Day Tag

I've come across the The Christmas Day Tag, which was created by Nina Louise Law and Becc4, on a few blogs lately, and thought it would be fun to give it a go myself.

This tag is all about this year's Christmas plans, so if you'd like to know how I'll be spending Christmas day, what I'll be eating for Christmas dinner, and what Christmas films I'll be watching, today is your lucky day.

Introducing The Christmas Tag:

What time do you wake up?

These days, I'm usually up around 8-9am on Christmas Day. I'm too old for that 6am Christmas morning excitement, but I also don't like to sleep in too late and miss too much of the day.

Where will you be spending the day?

I'll just be spending Christmas at home with my family.

What will you be wearing?

I haven't got my outfit picked out yet, but most likely a Lady Vintage Lyra dress with leggings (and Erstwilder Christmas accessories!) because those dresses make it look like I've made the effort, while also being super comfortable and able to accommodate all that extra food.

What games will you be playing?

If we can be bothered to play any games together, it will probably be a good ol' game of Monopoly, or maybe Rummikub, if we want something more non-committal. I'll almost certainly be logging on to Animal Crossing to enjoy the festivities on my island some time during the day, too.

What will you be eating?

We always have a turkey roast with all the trimmings on Christmas Day. That's generally made up of turkey, sage and onion stuffing (made with sausage meat), roast and mashed potatoes, parsnips, sweet potato, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, carrots, swede, and Yorkshire puddings, and whatever extras my sister and brother-in-law decide to bring this year. For dessert, we'll likely have the choice of my blackberry and apple trifle, my sister's Squidgy chocolate log (a lighter-than-air chocolate swiss roll filled with cream and chocolate mousse), and my Mum's apple pie. There'll also be plenty of nibbles like chocolates, biscuits, and nuts to snack on during the day, and if, by some miracle, we're hungry in the evening, we usually have turkey sandwiches for a late dinner.

What will you be drinking?

I'm not really supposed to drink on my painkillers, so I'll probably just be sticking to soft drinks again this year.

What will you be watching?

You'll find us watching whatever good festive films are on TV over Christmas- Santa Claus the Movie and The Muppets Christmas Carol are favourites with everyone in our house- and we almost always watch whatever Disney film is on on BBC1 in the afternoon after Christmas dinner. Or any classics like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang or Mary Poppins. In the evening, I might watch whatever festive drama is on TV or curl up with another Christmas movie or two, like The Holiday or Love Actually.

What do you hope to find under the tree on Christmas Day?

I would be thrilled to get some pretty new books (especially the Illumicrate Olivie Blake set and the new Hunger Games deluxe boxset), a new TV for my room, or this Loungefly Lady and the Tramp backpack.

Who will you be spending the day with?

I'll be spending the day with my parents, sisters, and brother-in-law. As well as my dog, Rosie, and my sister's dog, Mia.

When will you be opening your presents?

We usually open our presents together when everyone's up- around 9am these days, and then exchange presents with my older sister and brother-in-law when they arrive around midday.

And that's The Christmas Tag.

If you're reading this post and want to have a go at The Christmas Tag on your own blog or socials, consider yourself tagged! Be sure to leave me a link to your post if you take part so that I can read your answers!

The Christmas Tag

It wouldn't be Christmas without fitting in a festive tag post on the blog, and as I still haven't got the strength to take the photos I need for my other Christmas posts, it seemed like a good a time as any to give The Christmas Tag a go. Read on to find out what my favourite Christmas movie is, what my most memorable Christmas moment was, and where I would love to spend the holidays.

1. Is your Christmas tree real or fake?

Both! We always have a fake tree in the living room, and I have a small real tree in my bedroom so I can still enjoy the festive cheer while I'm resting. I'll share photos of them later in the month when all the decorations are up.

2.What is your favourite Christmas film?

Being a Christmas addict, I love Christmas films, and I honestly don't think I can choose just one. My all time favourites are probably Santa Claus The Movie, The Muppet Christmas Carol, Home Alone, The Family Stone, Christmas With The Kranks, and Little Women, but there are loads of others I adore, too.

3. Do you open any presents on Christmas Eve?

No, I haven't done that since I was little. Growing up, my parents let my sisters and I open one present each from under the tree on Christmas Eve after we'd come home from the family Christmas gathering in the evening, but now we're all grown up and have no kids in our immediate family, we prefer to wait until Christmas morning. I have started giving myself a Christmas Eve box of goodies on Christmas Eve, though... does that count?

4. What is your all time favourite holiday food / sweet treat?

If we're talking savoury, it would have to be hot turkey and stuffing sandwiches, or my sister's roast potatoes. If we're talking sweet treats, I couldn't pick just one. I love my Mum's apple pie, my sister's squidgy chocolate log, and my apple and blackberry trifle which we've made each Christmas for  as long as I can remember. They might not sound particularly festive, but it wouldn't be Christmas without them in my family. I'd pick them over mince pies or Christmas pudding any day of the year.

5. Be honest: do you like giving gifts or receiving gifts better?

I personally love giving gifts more than receiving them... probably because I'm a bit of a shopaholic, and love to shop! I enjoy hunting down the perfect gifts, spending the time gift wrapping them, and spoiling my friends and family. There's also the satisfaction of seeing their faces light up if I've got the present right. It makes me happy to make others happy.

6. What is your favourite thing about Christmas?

There are so many things I love about Christmas, but I think my favourite thing about it has to be spending quality time with my family, and actually sitting down to a meal together on Christmas Day. We only sit around the table together two or three times a year, so it always feels really special. We always end up laughing until our sides hurt and someone almost chokes on the turkey, and of course, you can't beat a traditional turkey roast with all the trimmings, can you? I also really love seeing houses adorned in colourful Christmas lights, decorating the tree with my family, and watching all my favourite Christmas movies on repeat.

7. What would be your dream place to visit for the holiday season?

In all honesty, I prefer spending Christmas at home, but I would love to experience Christmas somewhere cold with heaps of snow on the ground, and icicles hanging everywhere, at least once. Somewhere where snow would be falling heavily all day long, and we could keep warm in front of a roaring log fire with mugs of hot chocolate in our hands, while wearing chunky knit sweaters and cable knit socks in between treks outside to walk in the snow, have epic snowball fights, and go tobogganing down tall snow-covered hills like big kids. It would be a place where we could take a horse or reindeer-pulled sleigh ride in the snow, travel by husky-led sled, and spend the nights gazing up at the Northern lights from a glass-roofed cabin. I think my dream location would probably be somewhere in Scandinavia, but anywhere I could do those things in the Northern Hemisphere would be fine with me.

8. Do you make New Year's resolutions? Do you stick to them?

I do make New Year's resolutions, but I don't make ridiculous, unattainable resolutions like dropping half my body weight overnight, or giving up my novelty handbag habit anymore because I know I'll just lose interest and give up a few days later. I like to make lots of smaller, more achievable goals for the year instead such as learning a new craft, taking a holiday, reading more books, or improving my photography because I'm far more likely to achieve them.

9. Most memorable Christmas moment?

When I was nine, which must have been Christmas 1994, my parents gave my sisters and I a Sega Mega Drive for Christmas. We'd never had a modern games console before that point because we didn't have a lot of money growing up- we had an old Commodore computer that we played on an old black and white TV and the games took like an hour and a half to load, so you had to clear your day if you wanted to play on it- so it was the most exciting Christmas present we'd ever been given. My sisters and I spent most of the day impatiently taking it in turns to play games like The Lion King and Columns (a game similar to Tetris), marvelling at the 'amazing' graphics, and enjoying the novelty of having our own modern games console for the first time. It felt like the best Christmas ever, and we played on that Mega Drive daily for years. Most of my favourite Christmas memories aren't defined by presents, but that's one Christmas I doubt I'll ever forget.

10. What is your favourite Christmas song?

That's a tough one because I love so many Christmas songs; I literally have hundreds of them in my iTunes library! It's so hard to choose, but I think I'm going to go with 'I Believe In Father Christmas' by Greg Lake. I grew up listening to it every Christmas, so the music just makes me feel so nostalgic and festive each time I hear it. It reminds me of decorating the tree with my Mum and sisters, and driving to and from my Auntie's Christmas Eve parties with that Christmas Eve excitement in the air. I love it.

The Christmas Tag 2014

I've seen this challenge popping up on a few blogs lately, so since I'm feeling rather festive, I've decided to give it a shot today. I probably did this tag last Christmas, but it doesn't hurt to do an updated version, does it?

The Christmas Tag involves ten festive questions and ten festive answers, and you're all welcome to join in and have a go yourselves! Let's get started...

1. What is your favourite Christmas movie?

I'm not sure I could pick just one; I'm a Christmas movie enthusiast! I have a lot of favourites, including Santa Claus The Movie, The Family Stone, Home Alone 1 and 2, The Muppet Christmas Carol, and Christmas With The Kranks.

2. Do you open your presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?

We open our presents first thing on Christmas morning while we're still in our pyjamas. Growing up, we were occasionally allowed to open one present each (from relatives) on Christmas Eve night-probably to pacify our agonising Christmas excitement for five minutes. Now there are no excitable kids in the family, we can save everything for Christmas morning.

3. Do you have a favourite Christmas memory?

There's one random memory that comes to mind; it's nothing special or even interesting but it always makes me smile when I think about it. Early one Christmas morning, when I was about seven or eight, my older sister and I were so excited for Christmas that we couldn't sleep. I tiptoed in to her room and climbed in to bed with her, where we plotted to convince our parents that it was morning (and not 3am) by turning the clock forward a few hours. I was sent in to wake the parents with the clock as evidence, but obviously my parents didn't buy it; their alarm clocks betrayed us. It's such a random memory, but I can't help but laugh when I think of how how we laid in bed giggling and and chatting until dawn, longing for the agonising wait for Christmas to be over. The wait seemed to take forever!

4. Favourite festive food?

You can't beat a turkey sandwich on fresh white bread, my Mum's sage and onion stuffing, or good old roast potatoes.

5. Favourite Christmas gift?

Beside the Pound Puppies, Polly Pockets, and Puppy in My Pockets, the one that stands out to me is the Sega Mega Drive my sisters and I were given for Christmas when I was nine. Until then we only had an old Commodore, so it was such a novelty to have a current games console, and really special for us. We spent most of Christmas Day playing The Lion King and Columns.

6. Favourite Christmas scent?

It's a toss up between fresh Christmas trees and fir branches, and the smell of turkey roasting in the oven on Christmas morning.

7. Do you have any Christmas Eve traditions?

Yes, my family has one or two. My Auntie usually hosts a family gathering on Christmas Eve, and has done for almost two decades. We leave home around midday, bundle in to the car, pop a Christmas CD on, and spend an hour and a half travelling to the party. The annual gathering is a chance to catch up with relatives on my Dad's side, plus some of my Auntie and Uncle's friends. It's very informal, and we basically spend all afternoon chatting, grazing the buffet, and drinking. We leave by the early evening, and by then we all feel so festive and excited for Christmas, knowing it's just hours away. We drive home singing along to festive tunes, and look out for Christmas lights along the way. Over the last few years, my Auntie has thrown the parties a few days earlier, and it really isn't the same without that Christmas Eve excitement on the trip home.

8. What tops your tree?

When I was little it was always an angel. Today, we have a giant white glittery snow flake.

9. As a kid, what was the one (crazy wild, extravagant) gift you always asked for but never received?

I don't remember ever asking my parents (or Santa), for anything obscene. Nothing extravagant comes to mind. I've always been a big animal lover and we never had pets growing up, so I probably asked for a dog, a pony, or a rabbit at some point. When I was eleven I desperately begged for concert tickets to see Boyzone, but my Mum refused to get them for me. The tickets were only about £15 back then, so I'm not sure that really counts!

10. What's the best part about Christmas for you?

I love almost everything about Christmas, but if I had to choose it would be getting to spend quality time with friends and family, and seeing their faces when I get their gifts so right. I also love the build up to Christmas; the festive cheer, the pretty decorations, and watching Christmas movies!

Another Christmas Tag

Noel, noel, god rest ye merry gentlemen... and women,

I've got another Christmas tagged post for you today, also entitled 'The Christmas Tag', yet it's different to the one I had a crack at the other week. Just something light-hearted, and festive for a rainy Tuesday morning.

I saw this tag on another blog last week, and bookmarked it so I could grab the link to credit back when I had time to write this post. Of course, now I'm here, I can't find the post anywhere and have absolutely no idea where I read it. So if anybody knows where it originated, please let me know! The Christmas Tag idea isn't my own creation, although the photo below is.

Now, let's talk Christmas!

What time of year do you start your Christmas shopping?

I usually begin my Christmas shopping around September or early October, but this year I began in the new year and picked up things as I saw them! It's actually been a relief to have some presents stashed away for both birthdays and Christmas this year. I like to be able to spread the cost of Christmas, and also to have everything bought by December so I can relax and enjoy the festivities.

Do you have any festive recipes for food or drink you limit solely to the Christmas season to share?

Yes, we have a few recipes that are only made once a year for a special treat, mostly because they can be quite expensive to make, and quite lavish. I've been making a Blackberry and Apple Trifle each Christmas Eve for seven or eight years, which is delicious, if I do say so myself! I would eat it all year round if it wasn't for the cost and the calories! I've also been making a Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheesecake for the last few years, but I'm considering making something different this year instead, for a change.

Tell me how Christmas goes down in your home

My mother wakes my younger sister and I by 7am, (I'm still stuck living at home for the time being), and we go downstairs and open presents from our parents all together in our pyjamas with some Christmas music on. I then give my Mum her birthday presents, since it's also her birthday, and we then usually exchange gifts with each other. The turkey goes in the oven, some breakfast gets cooked (cue me feeling nauseated by the smell of bacon), and we can laze around for an hour or two. At least one of us usually goes back to bed for an hour or two! I usually lounge on the sofa, watching a Christmas movie, checking out the gifts I've been given. We go and get dressed by 11am. Dad goes to mass. Mum starts cooking. I work my magic on the dinner table. My older sister and brother-in-law arrive by midday and we exchange presents together. We all sit down for Christmas dinner around 1-2pm, and always end up laughing until our sides hurt. Stuffed, we waddle in to the living room and recover from all the delicious food in front of the TV. We'll have a drink or two and often break out the board games. When my sister and brother in law go home late afternoon, to enjoy Christmas evening together, we tend to get back in our PJs, and give each other some peace for a while. We have a really chilled evening with a few drinks, some festive TV, turkey sandwiches, a few nibbles, and perhaps another board game or two. It's only our immediate family on Christmas Day, so we're able to keep it lovely and casual, while still enjoying the festivities together in our own way. This year, I think I'll be spending the evening with my sister and brother-in-law and a glass or two.

Do you have any Christmas traditions?

My Auntie hosts a family get together every year, on Christmas Eve, although she's recently started hosting it a few days earlier to take the pressure off.

If it's on a Christmas Eve, we leave home around 1-2pm and on the hour and a half drive we listen to Christmas tunes, and soak up the festive atmosphere around us as we drive through country towns. Then we spend the rest of the afternoon and early evening at my Auntie's, which is always filled with my extended family on my Dad's side; family friends, neighbours, and a handful of people I never can place. Imagine thirty people or so squeezed in to a three bedroomed-semi! The house is decked out; she lays out a buffet; and we basically just spend the hours chatting, catching up, watching something festive with a few drinks, and grazing. Very casual, but really festive. People come and go, sparing what time they have, and as my family is catholic, some of them head off to mass for a while. Then we'll head home around 7 or 8pm, put the Christmas songs on again, and watch out for Christmas lights as we head home, feeling extremely festive, and excited for Christmas which by then is just hours away. Now it's usually held a couple of days earlier, I miss that excited Christmas Eve feeling we'd get from the visit, but it's still a lovely tradition, we go to every year just the same.

Do you have a favourite festive coffee?

Well, I've never drank a drop of coffee, so I haven't got one! My festive hot beverage treat is usually just a Costa hot chocolate. I had a hazelnut hot chocolate once, though, and it was just as delicious.

Do you have a favourite Christmas song?

I'm not sure I have one particular favourite; I have many, which I'm going to dedicate a post to before Christmas. I love I Believe in Father Christmas by Greg Lake; A Spaceman Came Travelling by Chris de Burgh; All Alone on Christmas by Darlene Love; Fairytale of New York by The Pogues; Wonderful Christmastime by Paul McCartney; Merry Christmas Everyone by Shakin Stevens, It's Only Christmas by Ronan Keating... to name but a few!

What do you do on Christmas Eve?

Well, as I said above, we always used to go to my Auntie's on Christmas Eve, and since she's now started holding it a day or two earlier, we're a bit unsure of what to do with ourselves! I spend the morning making a trifle and baking a cheesecake, and popping down to the supermarket for the last groceries we need. I've been known to spend a few hours at my sister's, too. I tie up any loose ends, and usually find myself wrapping last minute gifts my Dad has bought my Mum... lazy bugger! In the afternoon, I'm usually found baking nibbles with my Mum for a buffet tea, and getting the house perfect for the big day. We watch Christmas films, and that sort of thing. Sometimes we go off to an evening or midnight mass. By bedtime I'll be curled up with a festive book.

What's your Christmas wrapping strategy? Do you have a strategy?

I LOVE wrapping presents, and I usually turn my bed in to a wrapping station! I can't say I'm perfect at it, but I get top marks for effort! I spend hours on them; and this year took five sittings to get them done. I love to use gorgeous paper (this year it's Cath Kidston), and then embellish them with ribbon. I'll often add in bows, and a finishing touch, too. In the past I've used snowflake decorations, stars, and jingle bells from Paperchase. I try to make them look as special as possible.

What's your dream gift this year?

This year I actually don't have my heart set on anything in particular! I'm quite content with what I already have. If we're talking a proper fantasy gift, I'd be happy to unwrap a miracle recovery for my back injuries. Or some beautiful dresses, or concert tickets. I'm easily pleased.

Describe your Christmas tree. How tall? Real or artificial? How is it decorated?

Our family Christmas tree is a green 6ft artificial tree, with fake pine cones and berries attached to many of the branches. It's decorated with multi-coloured fairy lights which have lots of different settings; they can be still, twinkling, or going mental, if we so desire- and much more. We don't have a colour-scheme; we're not that fancy in our home. Our decorations have been collected over the years and hold lots of sentimental value. There are decorations from mine and my sisters' childhoods, my mum's childhood; some from when my parents first got together; and even some that belonged to my Nana. To some it may look tacky, but I love it. It holds so many memories, like a decorative over-sized scrapbook, which we add to every year.

I've also got a little 2ft Christmas tree in my bedroom, so I can have a bit of festive cheer while stuck in bed. It's the first real tree I've had in my house since I was eleven! It's potted in a silver enamel pot, so if I don't kill it by the end of the month, I should be able to plant it in the garden in the new year. It came with a few little red and white baubles on twine, a little grey felt house decoration, and a red bow on the top adorned with the words 'let it snow'. It's very scandi-chic, which is a style I love. I added some cheap white fairy lights, a couple of decorations I bought from Rockefeller Centre in NYC, red snowflakes, and a crystal snowman angel to jazz it up a little!

Do you decorate just the tree or other areas of your house e.g. windows, banisters?

I always decorate the mantel and fireplace with fir branches, pine cones, holly branches, and woodland animals (sadly not real ones!), and dot vases filled with baubles around downstairs. We have a few decorations like large snow globes and figurines dotted about, tinsel over pictures, card holders hung up, and a wreath on the door. I wish we had a banister to wrap garlands around, but unfortunately ours is made of brick. If I had my way, our home would be lit up outside like the Blackpool Illuminations, but my parents just stick to a couple of candle arch lights on the living room and kitchen windowsills. If I had full reign over the house I'd decorate each room. I'm a Christmas geek, and still have the visual merchandiser in me itching to make everything pretty! I've settled for the above, and decorating my boudoir with fairy lights.

What do you wear to Christmas parties and what do you wear on Christmas day?

At Christmas parties, you'll almost always find me wearing a beautiful dress with tights, my best jewellery, and some glitter on my nails, and this is true for Christmas Day, too. I love to dress up on Christmas Day, even though I only spend it with immediate family, although I'll be in my PJs until around 11am and back in them by 6pm! And at some point I'll probably be wearing a Christmas jumper!

The Christmas Tag 2013

Hey guys,

With Christmas on the horizon, it's fair to say I'm already getting in to the Christmas spirit, so I've decided to give The Christmas Tag a go.

You've probably seen it making it's way across the Blogosphere, but it originally came from the Make Up Pixi. I actually blogged a similar tagged post of hers last Christmas, but as this one is a little different I thought there was no harm in giving this one a go, too.

1.  Do you prefer a real Christmas tree or synthetic?

I personally prefer real Christmas trees- you just can't beat the smell of them! But, we've not had a real Christmas tree since I was about ten.

2.  You're in a coffee shop, it's December, what do you pick?

A trip to a coffee shop is a rare treat, and since I don't drink tea or coffee (shock, horror!), you'll probably find me ordering a hot chocolate from Costa (sans cream, as I'm lactose intolerant).

3.  Whats your favourite colour scheme for decorating the tree?

Colour schemes? What are those?

We've never gone with a theme for our trees. Our tree is basically an ornamental tree-shaped  memory box adorned with ornaments in all sorts of colours and designs that we've collected over our life times. There are decorations from my childhood, my Mum's childhood and I think a few from my Nana's, and unwrapping them to hang every December always brings back good memories. We usually add a few new decorations to the collection every year, and I love that our tree is so sentimental and meaningful. I'd take that over a colour-coordinated scheme any day!

4.  Giving or receiving?

Giving! I love to buy gifts for my family and friends, and put a huge amount of time, thought, and effort in to buying the perfect presents, and wrapping them up in pretty gift wrap. Obviously, I love to shop, but I also love to see my loved ones' faces when I've got the gift just right.

5.  To mince pie or not to?

I'll pass, thanks. I've never been a fan.

6.  What's your traditional Sunday lunch?

On Christmas Day, we have turkey with all the trimmings. That usually includes my Mum's sage and onion stuffing (it includes sausage meat and is so delicious); roast and mashed potatoes, butternut squash, parsnips, broccoli, brussel sprouts, carrots, peas, swede, pigs in blankets etc., and various condiments. (Obviously we don't all eat a bit of everything. I would die.) Now and then we've been known to add in something different to try, like goose, gammon, or a different veggie recipe, but we always have turkey for Christmas. It's a once-a-year indulgent meal, which makes it all the more special.

7.  Christmas day fashion

I'm usually in my pyjamas until ten or eleven am, then I like to get dressed up in a pretty dress, do my make up, and wear my swarovski earrings and a ring which I save for special occasions. They're quite a statement and dazzle when the light hits them; perfect for Christmas!

8.  What's your favourite Christmas song?

Christmas songs are a big weakness of my mine, so I have a few faves. Let's see...

All Alone on Christmas by Darlene Love.
Merry Christmas Everyone by Shakin Stevens
Merry Christmas Everybody by Slade.
A Spaceman Came Traveling by Chris de Burgh.
I Believe in Father Christmas by Greg Lake.
Stop the Cavalry by Jona Lewie.
Wonderful Christmastime by Paul McCartney.
Fairytale of New York by The Pogues.
Last Christmas by Wham.
It's Only Christmas by Ronan Keating.
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (just about all versions from Judy Garland to Ronan Keating).

... honestly, I could continue listing all night!

9.  What's your favourite Christmas film?

I'm not sure I can answer with just one, because I love my Christmas films. I've been known to start watching some of them in September... My favourites are definitely The Family Stone, Santa Claus The Movie, Christmas with the Kranks, Love Actually, Elf, The Muppet Christmas Carol, Home Alone 1 & 2, Miracle on 34th Street, The Snowman, and The Santa Clause.

10.  Open presents before or after lunch?

We've always opened our presents before lunch... generally at the crack of dawn! My Mum won't let us sleep past about 7am on Christmas Day and will drag us out of bed to open presents if we're not up! Now I think about it, this is probably pay back for all those years my sisters and I pestered them from about three in the morning to let us go open presents and begin Christmas until they gave in around six each year. Well played, Mum.

We usually open presents from about 7am, beginning with our gifts to each other, and then others under the tree. My older sister and my brother in law are usually round by 12:00pm, and we exchange presents with them soon after their arrival, before we sit down for dinner around 1-2pm.

If you want to give this tag a go yourself, please check out the original post over on the Make Up Pixi's blog.
