Aztec Stripes

A couple of weeks ago, I was a very lucky lady and won a giveaway on Naomi's blog Diamonds and Pearls. My prize was a £25 voucher to spend with F&F at Tesco.

I was naturally over the moon because it had been a few months since I'd last treated myself to some new clothes. It took me a few hours to narrow down my favourites, but eventually I chose to put the voucher towards two dresses. I bought this one (now on sale), which I'll share soon, and the dress I'm going to show you today.

When I first saw this Aztec skater dress online, I fell in love with it instantly and I knew I had to have it. The bright, patterned design was so eye catching and it looked a little different to anything in my wardrobe, yet in one of my favourite styles. I was quite honestly amazed that it was only £14! £14 for a beautiful viscose dress? Sold!

Isn't it gorgeous? I'm sure it's not to everybody's taste, but I personally love it! The dress is a short-sleeved skater dress with an Aztec print all over it, laid out in both horizontal and vertical stripes.

It's a little different to the average striped design; and it's probably the most wearable striped piece I've ever found for my personal taste. I love wearing patterned clothes and do so on a daily basis but I often feel broad-shouldered in stripes. I am naturally broad-shouldered, but I don't feel any wider than usual in this dress; I don't feel self-conscious about them. I think all those crazy Aztec patterns makes me feel like I'm not wearing stripes at all.

We're told that plus size women- or pretty much any woman who doesn't have the body of a Supermodel- should never ever wear stripes because they make us look bigger, but I've personally always thought that rule was ridiculous. I don't think stripes make us look larger, and so what if they do? If you want to wear stripes, wear stripes! If you want to dress up like a narwhal, do it; just so long as you're happy! If I like something, I'll wear it! But then, I've never really been one for rules... rules are made for breaking!

What I love most about this dress, is the use of colour; particularly the amount of cyan blue. It's so cheerful and not a colour you see often on pretty dresses these days. I wish I had more of it in my wardrobe. It's the happiest colour!

From the stock photos and description, I thought the dress had a fitted waist, and because Tesco dresses are often on the small side, I decided to size up. I really shouldn't have.

This dress actually has an elasticated waist and it's generously cut, so it's a bit too big on me, especially at the waist and around the boobs. I decided to keep it, though, because I love it, and I don't think it looks too over-sized on me. I think I can make it work by balancing it with fitted pieces, and by wearing it with a belt if I want a bit more definition.

Though I am tempted to pick up the smaller size, as well, because it's such a beauty, and I'd love to have a fitted version for when I want to look more presentable.

I'd recommend sticking to your normal size as the dress has a lot of room and good stretch at the waist. I can't speak for the correct size, but from wearing the size up the dress has plenty of room for large boobs; I'm a C cup (I thought I was a D until I was remeasured yesterday) and it's very loose in the boob-ular area on me. I'm not sure if this would be the case if I was wearing my normal dress size, though.

The waist, as I said, is elasticated, and the seam is concealed by a band of fabric, which I love because the different stripes seem to merge naturally together and it looks so much neater with the seams hidden.

It also has short sleeves, which I'm glad to say have a decent amount of room and haven't been cut too tight. They're still a little too short for me to feel comfortable wearing the dress without a cardigan or jacket, but that's mainly because I'm not confident baring my upper arms in public and I haven't been for a very long time. I'm working on it...

The dress is made from a medium-weight viscose, and it feels lovely and soft against my skin. It's the perfect weight fabric for Spring and Summer.

The dress is quite long for a skater dress; just below the knee on 5'6'' me. It should be perfect if you're a little taller and like your dresses long, but if you're much shorter than I am, you might prefer to get it shortened. It all depends on what length you're comfortable with.

The dress comes in UK sizes 6-22, and it currently retails for the bargain price of £14. That's practically free! Snap one up if you can, this dress is perfect!

I wore my dress with a blue cropped shrug from M&Co; a pair of purple Evans tights; my cobalt blue New Look ballet pumps; a cobalt blue Dorothy Perkins belt; and an adorable Cath Kidston brooch.

There's only one photo of me wearing the belt as I took photos with and without to show the difference in size / shape of the dress, but I wasn't happy with how most of my photos came out. I'm not all that happy with the photos I settled for, either, but after taking 100+ photos I was in so much pain that I had to call it a day and I really didn't want to scrap the outfit after putting myself in that state.

I've only recently worked out how to extend my sister's tripod to full height (yes, a gorilla would've worked it out faster); so I've been able to take photos in other spots in the garden. Everything's beginning to come to life again and I thought the purple plant, would make a pretty back drop. I think it's a ceanothus. It's just a shame the washing line runs across that spot and the ground isn't particularly flat.

Cobalt Blue and Pearls

Hey guys,

I hope you all had a great Halloween! What did you all get up to?

I did little more than carve a pumpkin and watch a couple of films (Hocus Pocus and Labyrinth have to be watched each year!). I've never really celebrated Halloween with proper dedication; the last time I went trick or treating, I was eleven, and the last Halloween party I went to was back in Brownies. Since then, I've just acknowledged the day with jack o' lanterns and movies. I wish we Brits marked All Hallows Eve the way you Americans do, as the festivities look amazing, but it's just not a huge deal over here. We market it more for kids. Saying that, I am content with my little traditions, and I had fun carving the pumpkin!

Moving on from Halloween, I've got a quick outfit to share with you today, which I wore a couple of weeks ago...

Firstly, I'm sorry for the quality of the photos. It was late in the afternoon when I snapped them, and it was also beginning to rain. But still, they're better than any I try to take indoors! (Which I'm trying to avoid doing because they're always terrible!)

A few months back during the summer, I won a New Look gift card from Becky and Betty's joint blog giveaway and this is one of the dresses I bought with it. I was drawn to the beautiful cobalt, because it's one of my favourite colours. Only, I completely forgot I had it and only rediscovered it the other week, hidden between a couple of other frocks. My wardrobe is just so crammed full of clothes now.

So of course, I made up for lost time and wore it. I really like this dress, but it's made from very thin fabric and doesn't conceal much- even though it's lined. You can see the shadow of my leggings in the photo, so perhaps I need to try it again with a slip underneath to make it a little more forgiving. It's very comfortable, though, and has a stretchy waist and pockets at the hips! Pockets! I can't believe I didn't know it had pockets until I took these photos! I love pockets! It also has pretty crochet detail to the neckline and hem.

I wore it with black leggings, and a blue shrug I bought on sale at M&Co for a few quid. I usually wear a clashing colour, but nothing in my wardrobe wanted to work with this dress, so cobalt it was. The longer sleeves are ideal for this time of year and it's really cosy. I also wore my studded navy slippers, and some pearl necklaces and bracelets.

These aren't great photos, but you can see the lace detailing, and a close up of the two necklaces I was wearing. (Apologies for the boobs!) I still adore the double cameo necklace that I won in Rachel's blog giveaway. I've barely taken it off all year!

Polka Dots and Skull Studs

Good Morning lovelies,

Did everyone have a good weekend? What did you all get up to?

On Friday night, I went off to the cinema to see Safe Haven with my two sisters and our friend, Clare. It was my first cinema trip in a year, and counting my recent venture to see Ronan Keating in concert, my second evening out in eighteen months! It was perhaps a bad move on my part; I was in so much pain and was constantly squirming in my seat as I couldn't get comfortable. I really enjoyed doing something 'normal' for a change, though, and getting to spend some quality time with the girls. I also loved the film, so I figure it was worth the pain.

I'd missed going to the cinema. I used to go regularly but I struggle to sit in a chair for more than ten minutes these days because of the pain. I need to work on pushing myself so I can go more often. I hadn't seen a new chick flick in a long time, and Safe Haven was lovely. I'd recommend it if you like romantic chick flicks with a bit of eye candy.  Hello, Josh Duhamel! Safe Haven is another of Nicholas Spark's novel adaptions, which also include The Notebook, Dear John, and The Lucky One. I don't like his books (I find them so badly written), but I do enjoy movies, even if they do all have the same basic storyline. Have any of you seen Safe Haven yet?

Of course, an evening at the cinema requires an outfit, so I have a quick OOTD to share with you this morning.

I kept things simple for the excursion to the cinema. Comfortable clothing, no belt, and limited accessories so I wouldn't restrict my comfort while sitting down for a couple of hours.

I wore one of my favourite dresses; my M&Co red polka dot tea dress which my Mum treated me to back in Autumn to cheer me up after a bad hospital appointment. It's become one of my most invaluable garments which I love to wear time and time again. It's so pretty, I love the shape and fit, and it's comfortable, too.

I paired it with thick black leggings, and my favourite jacket. The jacket is a cropped military jacket I bought from Red Herring a couple of years ago. I adore it, and would live in it given half the chance. It's so soft, and I love wearing it- especially over all of my dresses. I really don't care whether military is in trend when I wear it or not, I'm besotted with this jacket.

I accessorised with my grey Liquorish quilted skull-studded clasp bag. Now wasn't that a mouthful? The front is covered in little grey studs, and the bag has two straps which can change it from a clutch to a shoulder bag. I'm so impressed with that feature as it makes the bag so versatile and gives so many more outfit options. The bag can be found on sale here.

The only other accessories I was wearing here are a pair of ladybird earrings, a heart friendship bracelet, and a red rose Cath Kidston bracelet.

I'm dreaming in red, just drifting away...

Would you believe I actually have an outfit post for you today? No, me neither, but it's true! Before we go in to, I'll give you the story behind today's outfit.

After an upsetting hospital appointment with the pain clinic yesterday, I left upset, and to clear my head my Mum and I had a wander (or in my painful state, waddle) around a couple of shops in a nearby town. We ended up wandering in to M&Co...

I hadn't been in an M&Co since I was eleven or twelve and I'd always presumed the shop was frumpy and aimed at ladies in their Autumn years. Of course some of the lines are, but I was surprised to find some really pretty patterned dresses, tunics, and tops. If your style is quite feminine, I would recommend having a browse next time you're in town. I was also surprised to see they have a plus size range with quite a large selection, and plenty of colourful, fitted, and patterned pieces!! I saw sizes up to a 28. My Mum left with a gorgeous colourful tunic, and she bought me a dress, and a top to cheer me up.

Introducing my lovely new red polka dot tea dress...

I was watching Titanic (again). My DVD player has just gone to gadget heaven, so I'm making do with connecting Dad's portable DVD player to the TV.

My brooch kept falling off. I've no idea why I was grinning here!
Ta-da! Another polka dot number. I seem to have a habit of finding polka dot pieces where ever I go! I can't help it, they're just so pretty! This dress was the last one in the store, in my size, and on sale for just £15 instead of the rrp of £40! I waddled over to the changing rooms and fell in love with it the moment I tried it on.

The dress has a red slip underneath and is made of chiffon. I guess the pattern could qualify as Dalmatian instead of polka dot, as the spots are different sizes and shapes. The waist is elasticated, but thankfully doesn't cause discomfort and regular adjusting. I love tea dresses- they're just so retro and feminine, and I feel great in this one. The cheerful red fabric definitely plays a part in that.

I'm really struggling today with the pain and very limited mobility, but I forced myself to dress to get myself out of the doldrums. It has helped my mood a little. My fringe currently falls over my eyes, so I used the straighteners to curl it to add some volume, and pinned it back in to a little quiff. It's not often that I'm seen without a fringe! Hello awful eyebrows!

The dress came with a skinny red belt, although it's a little too short, so I've worn it with my black patent Dorothy Perkins belt instead today.

Today's accessories...

The owl necklace is a new addition to my collection. My older sister bought me it back from Disney World, of all places, this week! I love owls!

I bought this vintage brooch from a brooch stall in Camden Lock Market a couple of Winters ago. I can't remember how much I paid for it, but I fell in love with the green stones.

These adjustable rings were part of a set I bought in the ASOS summer sale.

I painted my nails with two purple Barry M colours on Monday, although it's started to chip off, so excuse the chipped nails.

Dress: M&Co
Belt: Dorothy Perkins
Leggings: New Look
Brooch: Camden Lock Market
Rings: ASOS (part of a set)
Necklace: Gift from Sister, bought in Disney World, Florida
Nail Polishes: Barry M in 303 Bright Purple and 161 Vivid Purple

As well as the dress, I came home with an orange polka dot tunic, which I think I can get away with for Autumn. I also fell in love with a swan print top, but it was more than I couldn't afford.

I picked up a few new storage containers earlier this week for my dressing table, which you can see in the outfit photos, (I'll do a post on that soon) and I returned my furniture to it's previous state as I hated the layout. Fingers crossed I'll get mon pere to decorate the room soon.

Have you ever shopped at M&Co before? Do you like their clothes?

Are you a fan of tea dresses?
